Portfolio update :3

Hands!

During the pre-production of Dorg Van Dango we designed several hand model sheets for each character in order to explain this very particular "CartoonSaloonesque" way of synthesizing anatomy. I had lots of fun trying to make them expressive but keeping the flatness at the same time. Here's a few:

Durante la preproducción de Dorg Van Dango diseñamos varios model sheets enfocados sólo en las manos de cada personaje para tratar de explicar esta manera tan particular que tiene Cartoon Saloon de sintetizar la anatomía. Me lo pasé super bien intentando hacerlas expresivas pero a la vez tratando de mantener el estilo plano. Aquí van unas cuantas:

Yooki!

Here are some poses of Yooki, another of Dorg's magical friends! This bipolar ghost goes from adorable kid to creepy monster in a second, which gives lots of room to play with the two extreme personalities in her design. ^w^

Props!

During the development of the 52 episodes of the show we created hundreds and hundreds of props. Designing and drawing them was one of my favorite things to do since they all have this very particular style in which the rule is to only show two sides of the object with zero perspective. It was so challenging and funny at the same time to find the perfect balance between flatness, appeal and functionality. Here I share with you a little selection of them. :)

Durante el desarrollo de los 52 episodios de la serie, creamos cientos y cientos de props. Diseñarlos y dibujarlos fue una de mis cosas favoritas ya que tienen este estilo tan particular en el que sólo podíamos mostrar dos lados de cada objeto con cero perspectiva. Era realmente una tarea sesuda y divertida al mismo tiempo el encontrar un balance entre diseño plano, atractivo visualmente y funcional a la vez. Aquí os dejo una pequeña selección con algunos de ellos. :)

Voulez

This little scout, Voulez, is Dorg's sister and a huge ball of energy! She was one of the first characters I worked with and, while drawing her poses, I learned so much about the flatness and stylisation of the show. Infinite thanks to our director Fabian Erlinghäuser who taught me all the tricks of this style: from big graphic shapes, to small details within them.

Esta pequeña scout, Voulez, es la hermana de Dorg y ¡toda una bola de energía! Fue uno de los primeros personajes con los que empecé a trabajar en el proyecto y, mientras dibujaba sus poses, aprendí tantísimo sobre la estilización tan particular de esta serie. Infinitas gracias a nuestro director Fabian Erlinghäuser por enseñarme todos los trucos de este estilo: partir de formas gráficas grandes y dividirlas en detalles más pequeños.

Mr. Sniggles

Mr. Sniggles was one of my favourite characters to design on the show. He was just a random monkey with kleptomaniac issues that appeared very briefly on an episode but he got my heart :3

Being a show animated with rigs, it's important to keep the facial expressions of the characters in the same angle but, in order to push certain emotions a bit more, I tried to include some hands and shoulders movement :)

Hi guys!! We finally got green light to share some of the designs created for the show Dorg Van Dango in Cartoon Saloon! During almost two years I was working as a character design and prop design supervisor and it was such an amazing experience!! Hi guys!

I'm SO happy to tell you that today is the premiere of Dorg Van Dango in Nickelodeon UK! :D 

Dorg was my first show working at Cartoon Saloon as a character design and prop supervisor and it was such an amazing ride! I couldn't ask for a better experience and a better team :3 

Special thanks to Fabian Erlinghäuser for creating this show and trusting me with such a special role on it, you are the BEST!

In a few months, once all the 52 episodes have been aired, I will be able to show you some of the artwork we did for the show. Be ready for lots of character designs and model sheets, I'm so looking forward to sharing them with you! For the moment, here's some promotional art :D

¡Hola gente!

¡Estoy TAN feliz de anunciaros que hoy se estrena Dorg Van Dango en Nickelodeon UK! :D

Dorg fue la primera serie con la que comencé a trabajar para Cartoon Saloon como supervisora de diseño de personajes y props y fue una auténtica pasada... No podría haber imaginado una experiencia ni un equipo mejor :3

Quiero dar las gracias especialmente a Fabian Erlinghäuser por crear esta pedazo de serie y confiar en mí para trabajar en un puesto tan especial, ¡mil gracias!

Dentro de unos meses, cuando los 52 episodios se hayan publicado, podré enseñaros el trabajo que hicimos para el show. Preparaos para un montón de diseños de personajes y model sheets, ¡me muero de ganas por compartirlos con vosotros! De momento, aquí os dejo unas cuantas piezas promocionales :D

#Faceyourart 2020

Coming a bit late to this party but here's my #faceyourart 2020!

I feel that this image is a good answer to the questions: "What's your style?" "How do you find your personal style?" "How do you know if your style is unique?"

Personally, I believe that the "style" is simply another tool to help us communicate better or express in a more efficient way a feeling or a concept in our artwork. Of course each artist has a different aesthetic sensibility, influences that we acquire over the years and a bunch of themes that line up side by side with our train of thought and ideals but... I honestly feel that to worry about finding an "unique style" to the point that paralyses our creativity shouldn't be such an obsession but we should rather enjoy this big set of tools that can help us develop ideas more broadly and in a richer way.

That's just my personal opinion, what's yours? :3

Llego un poco tarde a la fiesta pero... ¡aquí está mi #faceyourart 2020!

Creo que esta imagen es una buena respuesta a las preguntas: "¿Cuál es tu estilo?" "¿Cómo encuentras tu estilo personal?" "¿Cómo sabes si tu estilo es único?"

Personalmente, creo que el "estilo" es simplemente una herramienta más para ayudarnos a comunicar mejor o a expresar de manera más eficiente un sentimiento o concepto en nuestra obra. Por supuesto cada artista tiene una sensibilidad estética diferente, influencias que adquirimos a lo largo de los años y una serie de temáticas que se alinean codo con codo con nuestro tren de pensamiento e ideales pero... Sinceramente, siento que preocuparse por encontrar un "estilo único" no debería llegar a ser una obesión tal que paralize nuestra creatividad sino que deberíamos en su lugar disfrutar de este gran set de herramientas que nos ayudan a desarrollar ideas de manera más amplia y rica.

Esta es sólo mi opinión, cuál es la vuestra? :3

Street gang

Character Design JAM V!! This week was the turn of my soul bro Javier Pajuelo (we've been growing up together in our artistic paths since we were 18 years old!), go check his gorgeous art! His words for me were:

Coffee | Soil | Quiet | Nostalgic | Oak | Claw | Fugitive | Mustard | Pearl | Rough

When I was thinking about what idea to extract from the text I got the feeling that most of the words gave me vibes of different dog names so I decided to create this line up of outcast doggos who live in the streets: 

1. Claw lost his strongest paw on a fight when he was at his peak. He's well known for giving the best advice in dirty combat moves.

2. Pearl was a lap dog all her life until she got cataracts and became "not cute anymore". She uses her sense of smell (which, to her misfortune, is really precarious) to move around.

3. Quiet is quiet but fast.

4. Soil spends more time burying the ground than actually walking on it. Some dogs also call him "the mole".

5. Mustard is the eternal mum. She adopts any lost puppy that ends up in the streets.

6. Coffee doesn't know anything yet. This makes him hopelessly thoughtless. 

Character Design JAM V!! Esta semana fue el turno de mi tato Javier Pajuelo (llevamos creciendo juntos en este camino artístico desde que teníamos 18 años!) Id a ver sus trabajos, son preciosos! Sus palabras para mí fueron:

Café | Tierra | Silencioso | Nostálgico | Roble | Zarpa | Prófugo | Mostaza | Perla | Áspero 

Cuando empecé a pensar en una idea que extraer del texto, cada palabra me sugería un posible nombre de perro, así que decidí crear este line up de perretes callejeros:

1. Zarpa perdió su pata más fuerte en una pelea durante su juventud. Tiene renombre de dar los mejores consejos para combatir en juego sucio.

2. Perla fue una perrita faldera toda su vida hasta que enfermó de cataratas y dejo de ser "lo suficientemente mona". Usa su sentido del olfato (que, para su desgracia, es realmente precario) para moverse.

3. Silencioso es silencioso pero veloz.

4. Tierra pasa más tiempo excavando el suelo que caminando sobre él. Algunos perros también le llaman "el topo".

5. Mostaza es la eterna madre. Adopta a cada cachorro perdido que encuentra en las calles.

6. Café no sabe nada del mundo aún. Esto le hace irremediablemente inconsciente.

BARONG

Character Design JAM IV! This weekend was the turn of my amazing and super talented friend: Maria Madelaire! (Go check her awesome character designs!) Her words for me were:

Music | Decay | Spirit | Mask | Forest | Touch | Possessed | Hands | Twist | Mirror

I started doing a little research about which cultures have masks in their traditional dances and I was fascinated by the tale of the Balinese Barong: a lionesque creature, king of the spiritual world, which figure appears in different traditional dances like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRrOcbIP5-k&t=1489s

Super inspired by these videos and pictures I decided to create my own version of the Barong as if it was a real creature :))

Character Design JAM IV! Este fin de semana fue el turno de mi amiga y pedazo de artista Maria Madelaire! (Id a ver sus preciosos diseños de personajes) Sus palabras para mí fueron:

Música | Decaída | Espíritu | Máscara | Bosque | Tacto | Poseído | Manos | Giro | Espejo

Empecé buscando un poco de documentación sobre culturas que utilicen máscaras en sus danzas tradicionales y me fascinó el mito del Baron balinés: una figura leonada, rey del mundo espiritual, cuya presencia aparece en distintas danzas como esta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRrOcbIP5-k&t=1489s

Super inspirada con estos vídeos e imágenes decidí crear mi propia versión del Barong como si fuera una criatura real :))

YOU CAN'T

Character Design JAM III!! This weekend was the turn of the awesome Alarico Ciaramelli! (Go check his amazing character designs!) His words for me were:

Poetry | Manuality | Decadence | Rhythm | Contrast | Regret | Pushing | Chill | Hammer | Sharp

These words were so inspiring from the beginning that they really painted a clear picture in my mind: that emotion of feeling under pressure, judged and told off constantly (by others, by society, by even ourselves...) and how with age we learn to let it go and decide what we CAN do. I wanted to emphasize this feeling with the character growing exponentially with each frame until covering it completely at the end. :)

Character Design JAM III!! Este fin de semana fue el turno del genialísimo Alarico Ciaramelli! (Id a ver sus pedazo de diseños de personajes!) Sus palabras para mí fueron:

Poesía | Manualidades | Decadencia | Ritmo | Contraste | Arrepentimiento | Empuje | Calma | Martillo | Afilado

Estas palabras fueron tan inspiradoras desde el principio que enseguida pintaron una imagen clara en mi mente: la sensación de sentirnos bajo presión, juzgados y siendo cuestionados continuamente (por los demás, por la sociedad, incluso por nosotros mismos...) y cómo con los años aprendemos a dejar estas imposiciones a un lado y decidir qué SÍ podemos hacer. Quería enfatizar este sentimiento con el personaje creciendo exponencialmente con cada viñeta hasta cubrirla por completo al final. :)

The cave witch

"Something golden, something sharp, something furred and the smell of a loved one. A pinch of sea scent and the rustling of leaves. That's all I ask for if you want me to grant your wish."

Those were the very words from the cave witch and finally Emma had them all. "Tonight will be the night", she said to herself, "I just want dad to be back."

Character Design JAM II! This weekend was the turn of my amazing friend and housemate Antonia Yordanova! (Go check her beautiful art :D). Her 10 words for me were:

Longing | Golden | Dreamy | Sharp | Touch | Fantasy | Furred | Rustling of leaves | The smell of a loved one | Sea scent breeze |

Immediately with her words I had a succession of images popping up in my head so I felt the need to tell the story with panels this time. I hope you like it! :D

"Algo dorado, algo afilado, el pelo perdido y el olor de un ser querido. Una pizca de brisa del mar y el sonido de las hojas al pasar. Eso es todo lo que te pido si tu deseo quieres ver cumplido."

Esas fueron las precisas palabras que pronunció la bruja de la cueva y por fin Emma había conseguido recopilarlas todas. "Esta noche será la noche", pensó para sí  misma, "Sólo quiero que papá vuelva."

Character Design JAM II! Este finde le tocó participar a mi genial amiga y compañera de piso Antonia Yordanova! (Echadle un ojo a su pedazo de trabajo :D). Sus 10 palabras para mí fueron:

Nada más leer sus palabras una serie de imágenes apareció en mi cabeza y sentí la necesidad de utilizar viñetas esta vez. Espero que os guste! :D
